Prevent Further Injury
- Secure the scene to prevent further injury.
- Someone takes charge.
- Put on flashers and move uninvolved vehicles.
- Leave room (100 ft.) on either side of crash site.
- Make sure crash site is visible (flashers, lights, flags, vests).
- Control traffic in each direction—be visible.
Assess the Situation
- Determine your physical location.
- Determine who and how many people are involved and extent of their injuries.
- Decide on additional protection for the scene to prevent further injury.
Contact EMS
- Assign a person to call 911 and tell you when contact has been made; stay connected to EMS.
- Make sure EMS/ 911 has someone’s contact number.
Treat the Injured
- Don’t move the injured person unless:
- hot pipes on leg
- in middle of road with poor visibility
- laying in gasoline
- face down and not breathing
- if nightime and you must leave scene to get help
- Talk to the injured person, ask questions.
- Do not remove helmets.
- Use your training in CPR and basic first aid (see First Aid).
- Obtain injured person’s emergency contact info.
